[004] Early morning musings
June 22nd, 2018 06:33 amI woke up at 4am this morning. I usually go right back to sleep. Today I got up instead. I opened a window, made myself a cup of Earl Grey tea, and read until the alarm told me it was time to get ready for work. I'll sleep in tomorrow, make up for some lost sleep. But how many chances do you get to read a great book on an early summer morning with a storm thundering in the distance to keep you company?
I haven't always been an early riser. I used to be a night owl in my teens. Then something changed and I learned to appreciate the early hours of the day. I love early mornings, when almost everyone is still asleep, for the same reason why I loved late nights: because they feel like they belong to me alone.
It's on an early morning like this one that I realized I don't belong in big cities. Other people can have them. People who love crowds and constant stimulation. I find happiness and beauty in silence, solitude and space. It might seem like a small thing to realize, but it changed the course of my whole life.
I thought about it this morning, in between chapters and sips of tea. And then I decided that the trip I'm planning to New York for next year can wait. I'll get there eventually, but not yet. Not in 2019.
In 2019, I'm going back to Northern Europe.
